Coordinating community partnership in Ashford

We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be supporting Caritas Ashford as they partner with local businesses and Ashford Borough Council to bring hope and practical help to those most in need. As part of our wider mission across the Archdiocese, Caritas Southwark is working closely with the Ashford team to coordinate this new project — helping them connect with local enterprises, share their story more widely and continue building strong relationships within the community.

The collaboration follows Ashford Council’s offer to promote Caritas initiatives through its local networks, encouraging businesses to get involved in community service. To move this partnership forward, Caritas Southwark is helping to develop a detailed project plan that highlights the impact of Caritas Ashford’s ongoing work — showing how faith in action can transform lives.

A Community Rooted in Service

Caritas Ashford, based at St Teresa of Avila, has become a shining example of parish-based outreach in our Archdiocese, offering impactful ways to serve their local community. Their Café Caritas, for instance, has provided a warm welcome to parishioners and neighbours alike — a place where tea, coffee and simple conversation build friendship and belonging. Throughout 2025, the Café has run on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Their commitment to local families is especially visible in their Christmas Toy Appeal. In December 2024, volunteers distributed gift request slips, collected and wrapped toys for refugee children and even delivered surplus gifts to William Harvey Hospital. Thanks to the generosity of parishioners, the initiative was such a success that it will return next month.

Environmental care is also at the heart of their mission. In July 2024, Caritas Ashford hosted an E-Waste Collection in partnership with the Council’s Digital Waste Team. Parishioners donated unused phones, laptops and cables, which were securely wiped and recycled — with activities included for children to learn about sustainability. Another collection took place earlier this year, reflecting an ongoing commitment to good stewardship of creation.

Alongside these projects, Caritas Donation Boxes placed near the church entrance continue to collect tinned goods, toiletries and other essentials. Many of these items are distributed locally, while also supporting the Salvation Army in South Willesborough. Caritas volunteers also visit the community breakfast and food bank and even help find larger items like washing machines or high chairs for struggling families.

Looking Ahead Together

Through this new partnership initiative, Caritas Southwark hopes to help Caritas Ashford share these inspiring projects more widely — ensuring that local businesses, community partners and the Council can see firsthand the difference made by parish volunteers.
