Key takeaways from our recent Parish Reps meeting

We recently met with our network of parish reps from across the Archdiocese to share updates, strengthen connections and discuss new ways of supporting social action at the local level. The gathering brought together an inspiring mix of experience and enthusiasm from Caritas Ashford, Jackie and Michael McLoughlin from St Elphege’s in Sutton, (who have long been involved in Catholic social action), a JPIC Rep from St Mary’s Blackheath, parishioners from English Martyrs Walworth, and others actively involved in charitable and justice-focused initiatives.

Together, we reflected on the outreach already happening in parishes, from long-standing justice and peace groups to foodbank partnerships, refugee support and community cafés, and on how we can better sustain and connect these efforts across the Archdiocese.

Building Support and Resources

A key focus of the conversation was how Caritas Southwark can best equip and encourage parishes in their local mission. We’re looking at developing clear, practical resources that can serve as a first point of reference for anyone hoping to start or strengthen parish-based social action.

We also spoke about funding, exploring ways to make information about opportunities and processes more accessible to parishes so that good ideas can more easily take root and grow. The discussion underlined the importance of simple guidance, shared learning and mutual encouragement between parishes.

Looking Ahead

The meeting showed a strong appetite to reconnect and collaborate more closely across deaneries. We parted with renewed energy to take conversations back to our communities, and we will continue building this network over the coming months.

We’re keen to hear from any parish interested in developing or expanding social action locally. If your parish would like to get involved or have a conversation with us about how to begin, please reach out to us at caritassouthwark@rcaos.org.uk.
