At a time when hostile rhetoric against migrants and asylum seekers continues to rise, together with Seeking Sanctuary we are calling for a renewed commitment to compassion, understanding and community solidarity.
Ben Bano has recently expressed concern about moves by local authorities to relocate asylum seekers currently living in temporary accommodation such as hotels. “We oppose any Council seeking to displace asylum seekers from their current residence in hotels,” he said. “While we await the provision of more suitable accommodation, we need to focus on public education and supportive initiatives to counter the extremist narratives promoted by some political figures. There are many examples of local community groups and faith communities providing support to those placed in hotels, showing that humanitarian initiatives can promote understanding and tolerance at a local level. Some groups help to provide people with, essentials as well as offering hospitality in their homes. Let’s stop the intolerance and demonisation and show how, through combatting these intolerant narratives, there is a better way forward.”
As Catholics, we are called to recognise the dignity of every human being. Caritas Southwark joins Seeking Sanctuary in urging our communities and leaders to reject demonising language and policies. Instead, let us continue building communities of welcome, where everyone can find safety, hope and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
